Today’s recipe request was from my
friend whose crazy of South Indian Dal. And I bet lot of people are out there
who love the simple Tomato Dal.
I have inherited this simple Dal from
my Mom’s Kitchen. In Karnataka we famously mention this Dal as Tomato Belle Saru. I remember in no
time my Mom used to make this Dal and serve with hot rice and some
Papad/pickle.
You can make this simple Dal with minimum ingredients
at home and when there’s absolutely no vegetable at home.
Tomato Dal
Ingredients:
Toor Dal – ¼ cup or 4 tsps
Finely chopped Tomato – 2 nos

water for 20 mins)
Sambar Powder – 2 tsps
Oil – 2 tsps
Coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Tempering:
Mustard – 1 tsps
Curry Leaves – 1 tsp
Jeera – 1 tsp
Hing (Asafoetida) – a pinch
Method :
Pressure cook Toor dal with tomato,
pinch of Haldi, few drops of oil and one cup of water. Mash the Dal and Tomato

crackle on a medium flame.
Add the Sambar Powder (you can use
MTR Sambar Powder) and fry it for 2 mins, add the tamrind extract and mix well.
Add the cooked Dal and tomato to this and bring this to boil. Add salt to taste
and fresh finely chopped coriander. Allow it to cook for 2-3 mins.
Tasty , simple Tomato Dal ready to be served with hot rice.
